Discomfort from desk work is usually less about one wrong posture and more about holding any posture for too long. Small, frequent changes generally help more than a single dramatic adjustment.
A workable starting setup
- Screen roughly at eye level, an arm's length away
- Elbows supported and close to your body
- Feet flat, with the chair supporting your lower back
- Frequently used items within easy reach
Movement breaks that fit a working day
- Stand and walk for a minute or two every 30 to 45 minutes
- Gentle neck rotations and shoulder rolls between tasks
- A short standing stretch of the hips and lower back
- Take calls standing where practical
When to get it looked at
If discomfort persists for several weeks despite setup changes and breaks, or if you develop arm numbness, weakness or persistent headaches, an assessment is sensible.
